Writers on the blog Stand Firm have progressively identified real problems with this situation, and questions that needed answering over a period of many months – but they were by no means the only ones to do so. Let’s not pretend that Stand Firm was alone in expressing concern over the way matters were developing.
As things have turned out, Baucum+, his congregation and his bishop have together considered the various developments (some of them quite recent) and made decisions. In my view, they were overly patient in the face of terrible provocations by +Johnston, but whatever, they have finally said ‘enough is enough’, and +Johnston cannot complain that he was not given ample opportunity to truly repent.
Unfortunately +Johnston has proved Proverbs 26:11 to be right yet again.
I think that we realized that TEC’s brand of “reconciliation” was capitulation and accepting the rightness of their actions. This is not “reconciliation”. A better example of reconciliation might be seen in Zacchaeus or the Prodigal Son. In those accounts the persons seeking reconciliation repent of their sins and offer restitution, in Zacchaeus case far exceeding the requirements of the Law set out in Leviticus 6:1-7. In this case TEC did none of this.
Indeed TEC maintains that it did nothing of which it needs repent, and any reconciliation must be on its terms and acceptance of its actions and false teachings.
I hope that all Anglicans will be similarly wary of the “reconciliation” process being pushed by Lambeth. The underlying disputes about Gospel issues must be part of any genuine reconciliation; that is, those who are teaching wrongly must repent.
Well, StandFirm, not an restrained place, had some people who were willing to assume the worst too soon, while others thought more that Rev. Baucom was being used and perhaps should have been more expecting of what transpired, but I think Rev. Baucom is mature and can take criticism and shown in his letter that he understands now what happened. I give him a great deal of credit for how this was closed. In fact, in some ways, I am thankful for the clarity of this denouement and think it perhaps affords a better testimony by Truro than had it never happened.
